Monument historique, plus ancien édifice religieux de la capitale, se dresse sur son unique colline qui, selon la légende, serait à l’origine de la ville.
Une riche veuve du nom de Penh, aurait découvert 4 ou 5 statues de Bouddha échouées sur les berges du Mékong et les aurait placées sur la colline pour les protéger.

L’endroit fut alors nommé Phnom Penh, soit la colline de Penh.
