Tribute to photographers, guardians of memory

Postcard publishers : guardians of memory

In 2010, with the internet and text messaging dominating our lives, and Facebook and social media becoming the main platforms for communication and interaction, sending postcards seemed old-fashioned, outdated, and pointless.

So I wondered why this little piece of cardboard, decorated with a photograph, had been so successful. How had it been able to generate so much wealth and fortune, and transport recipients on journeys, to new places, moments of happiness and sometimes sadness ?

In 2013, I immersed myself in the world of postcard publishers : Dieulefils, the iconic publisher in Vietnam, Raquez, the publisher in Laos, and many others. That’s when I discovered the remarkable website of Marie-Hélène Degroisse (who died in 2012), a veritable gold mine for enthusiasts :

I strongly encourage you to visit it. Inspired by his research, I decided to enrich his work in my own way by adding postcards available on the market today.

The slideshow on publishers will give you a fascinating overview of the many authors, photographers, and publishers who immortalized Indochina through their works.
